"Interpret geographic phenomena with maps and spatial data."
Zane Ross Project
First I ask the school students if they knew what the world used to look like. I would then wait for their responses. I would have been impressed if one of them told me it was called Pangaea. So if they did not know, I would tell them it was called Pangaea and get this map up.
https://www.visualcapitalist.com/incredible-map-of-pangea-with-modern-borders/
Then I would tell them that Pangaea broke up over time a few different times because of the tectonic plates. And get the video up of that.
Is it not so cool how the world we live in today, where if you were from Australia you have to fly halfway across the world to America. But on Pangaea, you could simply walk if you wanted to. I would refer back to the video to talk more about how countries changed continents as the continents broke up. I would also talk about some of the key countries and how each country if pangaea only broke up only a few times, how each country might have a different neighbouring country. I would then talk about google earth. I would show them how you can go back into time and look at what their homes used to look like some years ago. Then I would tell the students, that understanding mapping in geography is extremely important. As mapping is a key concept in geography. Without maps, we would never truely understand how the world looks and what the world used to look like.
Student Digital Storytelling
Research topics, digital stories, and other projects posted by CCC students from instructions in course.
Digital Story student productions usually use iMovie for Mac or Moviemaker for PC that are free downloads. Three minutes is the typical length, personal voice over telling about a place of choice, music in the background; one of the slides shows a map of where the place is. Student productions are published to youtube or vimeo then shared using embed code for future students to view too.
There are quides to digital storytelling online at places like

If you need help using Windows Movie Maker this is a good tutorial:

Your posted work here is a personal, virtual reflection, your sense of place in the world today and/or the past/future experiences of culture important to you. Your posted work will be public, indefinitely, on the internet.

"Puerto Rico"

I chose the western hemisphere region and the island i chose within the hemisphere is Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island and unincorporated U.S. territory with a landscape of mountains, waterfalls and the El Yunque tropical rain forest. Puerto Rico is divided into 78 municipalities that in turn are divided into neighborhoods and neighborhoods are divided into Sectors. Municipalities are grouped into eight senatorial districts and 40 representative districts, which do not have administrative functions. In 1991, the Autonomous Municipalities of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico law was created as a strategy for decentralization and government improvement services for people. In recent years, several mayors have demanded a revision of the law.
The municipalities elect a mayor and a municipal legislature in the general elections every four years. This municipal legislature is a unicameral body and its number of members varies depending on the population of each municipality, the largest being the Municipal Legislature of San Juan with seventeen (17) members and the smallest of Culebra.
The municipality of Arecibo is the one with the greatest territorial extension and Cataño the smallest. As for the number of inhabitants is San Juan, with almost 400,000 inhabitants, the largest population and the island-municipality of Culebra, the town with fewer inhabitants, with just over 1800 inhabitants.
I'm Puerto Rican born and raised, most of the information is based on my experiences mixed with some information on the internet. Decide to do it that way so people will learn more and I will feel more conformable talking about something I already know.

"Big Creek" Hays, Kansas
I decided to write about a body of water called Big Creek. Big Creek is a community lake that was formed by the damming of Big Creek as it flows around the South part of Hays. It is a beloved part of the city and many natives are proud of it and will even make an effort to visit it on a nice day. There are many nature trails located around it as well as a frisbee-golfing course and a park to keep people entertained when they do go visit it.
Many people also enjoy fishing in Big Creek when the water levels are high enough! KDWPT (Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism) regularly supplies the existing fishery with many kinds of sport-fish such as catch-able large mouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish in the summer time. At its maximum depth, Big Creek is 3 feet deep.
Because Big Creek is not exceptionally deep, when Hays receives more than an inch or two of rain it often overflows, making it difficult for Fort Hays college students to get to campus. Other times Big Creek will dry up completely and all that will be left are the muddy river beds it left behind. Big creek is located in a fairly flat area and many of the animals that roam around it are animals we see often in Colby as well. Some of these animals include deer, squirrels, robins, white tailed rabbits, and mice.

Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea, about 10 miles off the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, southeastern Mexico. The island is the largest island in the Caribbean Sea. It is about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide.
Cozumel is one of the most popular cruise ports in the world. With Cozumel's clear, warm water, breathtaking coral reefs, and several marine life it makes Cozumel one of the world’s best scuba-diving destinations as well as a major resort. Not only is Cozumel popular for this reason, but also Cozumel's mangrove forests in the large parts of the island. With that being said, there are several different species of plants, trees, and wildlife. The city that cruise ships port at is San Miguel. San Miguel is, in fact, the only city that cruise ships port at.

"Australia"

I chose the Eastern Hemisphere region and the country I chose within the hemisphere is Australia. Australia officially became a federation in 1901. Australia was colonized in 1788 when Captain James Cook and the convicts arrived from Great Britain, discovering Sydney Harbour. Australia was also the second country in the world to grant women the right to vote; this occurred in Australia is an extremely diverse country. 49% of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas and moved to Australia. Australia's Aboriginal people are estimated to have lived here for roughly 50,000 years, yet they now make up only 1.5% of the total population. Australia has one of the world's lowest population densities – it's size is only a bit smaller than the USA, yet the population is only around 23 million, as opposed to 313 million in the United States. Despite being a massive continent, 90% of Australia's population lives on the coast due to the majority of the interior being a vast desert.
Australia is most known for its beautiful animals. The Kangaroo and Emu were chosen to be the two animals on the Australian Coat of Arms because they can't walk backward, reflecting a forward-thinking culture. 17 of the world's most poisonous snakes can be found in Australia. Australia is home to around 1,500 types of spiders, 4,000 types of ants, and 350 types of termites. While Kangaroos are considered a national icon, with over 40 million estimated throughout the country, they can also be considered a pest in some locations and are sometimes culled.
Some interesting facts I found out about Australia:
Former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke once held the Guinness World Record for the fastest beer sculling, downing 2.5 pints of beer in 11 seconds (he recreated the legendary feat at the SCG in January 2017). Australia is the driest of any continent on earth other than Antarctica. The Great Barrier Reef is regarded as the world's largest living organism and is often listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World. Australia is the only continent covered by a single country. The Aussie state of Tasmania has the world's cleanest air. Uluru (Ayers Rock) is known as the largest monolith in the world and is over 8km wide at its widest point. You used to be allowed to scale Ayers Rock. Australia is the 6th largest country in the world in terms of land area.
I'm Australian born and raised, most of the information is based on my experiences mixed with some information on the internet. Decide to do it that way so people will learn more and I will feel more conformable talking about something I already know.
